Spoil mum with a High Tea to Remember

The traditional High tea was created for the Queen as a snack in between lunch and dinner which was usually served at 8pm. It’s more substantial than a simple afternoon tea, so you may be able to skip dinner or serve it as a late lunch. It’s also a little more formal as it’s served at a table.

What to serve at a high tea?

A high tea is generally served on a three tier cake stand accompanied by fine bone china, silverware, and dainty finger foods. Think egg or smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwiches, or the traditional club sandwich on the bottom layer. Make sure your sandwiches are “crust free” and cover them with a damp cloth before serving to keep them fresh.

The middle layer features scones and jam or you can include a range of savoury items to balance out the sweet treats on the top layer. The top layer is your chance to create a show stopping and delicious petit dessert. Fairy cakes, mini cupcakes, eclairs or macarons would work well here.

Most importantly, tea is served. Usually an Earl Grey or you can serve a range of special herbal teas. They need to be refreshing and not overpowering. A glass or two of bubbly makes it even more special.

What to wear?

You could go all out and make an event of it. Dress up in your party gear, send formal invitations to those in your bubble and extended family, connecting with Zoom or Skype. Make sure they have their own High tea at their place so they don’t feel left out!
